A meld is a group of three or four tiles of the same number and different colors (a set), or a sequence of three or more tiles of the same color and consecutive numbers (a run). A pair of identical tiles can also be used as a meld.


Players start with hands of 21 tiles each, instead of 15 as in ordinary Okey. To open their hand, they need to reach at least 101 points with their melds. Once they open their hand, they can also lay off tiles on their own or other players' melds. The round ends when one player knocks by discarding their last tile or when there are no more tiles left in the draw pile. The points for each player are calculated based on their remaining tiles. How to Set Up Okey 101




The Tiles




Okey 101 uses a set of 106 rummy tiles. There are four different colors of tiles: black, red, blue, and yellow. Each color has tiles numbered from 1 to 13. There are two copies of each tile, making a total of 104 numbered tiles. There are also two special tiles, called jokers, that have no color or number. They are marked with a star symbol.


The jokers are used as wild cards in the game. They can substitute for any tile in a meld, as long as they are not adjacent to each other. For example, a joker can be used to complete a set of three 10s of different colors, or a run of 5-6-7-8 of the same color. However, a joker cannot be used to form a pair, or to extend a run beyond 13 or below 1.


The Board




Okey 101 is played on a board that has four sections, one for each player. Each section has a space for the player's hand, and a space for the player's melds. The board also has a central area where the draw pile and the discard pile are placed.


The draw pile is formed by stacking the tiles face down in groups of five. The discard pile is formed by placing the tiles face up next to the draw pile. The discard pile is where players discard their unwanted tiles during the game.


One tile from the draw pile is randomly selected and placed face up on top of the last group of tiles. This tile is called the indicator tile. It determines which tile will be the joker for that round. The joker is the tile that has the same number and color as the indicator tile, but one rank higher. For example, if the indicator tile is a red 5, then the red 6 is the joker. If the indicator tile is a 13, then the 1 of the same color is the joker. If the indicator tile is a joker itself, then all the tiles marked with a star are jokers.


The Players




Okey 101 is played by four players, who sit around the board in a clockwise direction. The player who sits opposite to the dealer is called the eldest hand. The player to the right of the dealer is called the right hand. The player to the left of the dealer is called the left hand.


The dealer is chosen randomly at the beginning of the game. The dealer shuffles and deals the tiles, and also plays first in each round. The dealer changes after each round, moving to the right hand.


How to Start Okey 101




The Deal




The dealer shuffles all the tiles and places them face down on the board in groups of five. Then, each player throws one die to determine who will cut the tiles. The player with the highest roll cuts the tiles by taking any group of tiles from anywhere in it to everyone. They can only draw from the discard pile if they can use that tile to open their hand or to lay off on the board.


  • Lay off any tiles they want on the board, either on their own melds or on other players' melds. They can only do this if they have already opened their hand, or if they are opening their hand with the tile they just drew. They cannot lay off more than one tile on each meld.



  • Discard one tile face up on the discard pile. They cannot discard a joker or a 1, unless they are knocking (see below). They also cannot discard the same tile they just drew from the discard pile.



The turn then passes to the next player in clockwise order.


The Melds




A meld is a group of three or four tiles that form a valid combination. There are three types of melds in Okey 101:


  • A set is a group of three or four tiles of the same number and different colors. For example, a black 7, a red 7, and a yellow 7 form a set. A joker can be used to substitute for any missing tile in a set.



  • A run is a sequence of three or more tiles of the same color and consecutive numbers. For example, a blue 4, a blue 5, and a blue 6 form a run. A joker can be used to substitute for any missing tile in a run, as long as it is not adjacent to another joker. A run cannot go beyond 13 or below 1.



  • A pair is two identical tiles. For example, two black 9s form a pair. A pair can only be used as a meld if it is the last meld of the player's hand, and if it is not formed with jokers.



A player can form as many melds as they want with their tiles, as long as they follow the rules above. They can also rearrange their melds on the board as they wish, as long as they do not break any existing melds.


The Layoffs




A layoff is adding one tile to an existing meld on the board, either on the player's own melds or on other players' melds. A player can lay off any tile they want, as long as it follows these rules:


  • The tile must fit into the meld without breaking it. For example, a player can add a blue 8 to a run of blue 5-6-7, but not to a set of three 8s of different colors.



  • The tile must not create a duplicate meld. For example, a player cannot add a yellow 7 to a set of three 7s of different colors, if there is already another set of four 7s on the board.



  • The player can only lay off one tile on each meld. For example, a player cannot add two tiles to extend a run of blue 5-6-7 to blue 5-6-7-8-9.



  • The player must have already opened their hand, or be opening their hand with the tile they just drew. For example, a player cannot lay off a tile before reaching 101 points with their own melds.



Laying off tiles is optional, but it can help reduce the player's points and increase their chances of winning.


How to End a Round of Okey 101


The Knock




A knock is a way to end a round by discarding the last tile in the player's hand. A player can knock if they have no unmatched tiles left in their hand, or if they have only one unmatched tile that is a joker or a 1. A player cannot knock if they have not opened their hand yet.


To knock, a player must announce "knock" or "okey" and discard their last tile face down on the discard pile. They must also show their hand to the other players and prove that they have no unmatched tiles left. If they have a joker or a 1 as their last tile, they must also reveal it.


If a player knocks correctly, they end the round and score zero points for that round. If a player knocks incorrectly, they are penalized with 101 points and the round continues with the next player.


The Scoring




At the end of a round, either by a knock or by running out of tiles in the draw pile, each player's score is calculated based on their remaining tiles. The points are based on the numbers on the tiles, with jokers counting as 50 points and 1s counting as 25 points.
